Visibility tackles the national media coverage of abnormally colorful sunsets seen nationwide due to particulate matter from California wildfires dispersing throughout our atmosphere.
#Sunsetexperience2019 was a performance piece that began with me inviting folx into my studio by asking them to wear a hand-painted and bedazzled respirator that read #Sunsetexperience2019. The audience of 18 then sat in front of a painting. The four foot wide canvas ran from floor to ceiling, stapled to the wall. Across the canvas I’d placed stretcher bars, sitting atop nails. Colorful red, orange, and yellow brushstrokes ran sparingly across the canvas and stretcher bars, and on the walls (including floor and ceiling) surrounding the canvas. The chaotic painting was supposed to resemble a sunset. To perform I stood atop a ladder and read bits of national media coverage on the gorgeous sunsets appearing due to the CA wildfires, intermittently pausing to rip the canvas off the wall, slowly revealing a painted silver wall behind it, representative of wildfire smoke.
